Diagonal Cross Hatching Template

The Diagonal Cross Hatching Templates were designed by "accident".

I was working with my Sashiko Templates and had a horrible time making the exact diagonal lines which add a lot of texture and variety to the basic Sashiko designs. I needed a way to make these diagonal lines - and make them accurately!

Working with the Sashiko templates and Sashiko quilting designs I created a new template to make these accurate diagonal lines - which is what I needed for the Sashiko.

Then I realized that if you took away the Sashiko, you had diagonal cross hatching!

The Diagonal Cross Hatching Template can be used with both Sashiko designs AND diagonal cross hatching! This multi-tasking at its best! The Diagonal Cross Hatching Templates can be used in borders, in blocks and behind applique, or anywhere you would like!

As with my other templates, the Diagonal Cross Hatching Templates compensate for the width of the hopping foot of the quilting machine.

The Diagonal Cross Hatching Templates were designed to be used with Sashiko Templates. Because of the accuracy that is need when working with Sashiko, you need to indicate what brand of longarm quilting machine you have.

Believe it or not, there is a difference - of only a couple of hundredths of an inch - between the size of the hopping foot of different quilting machines. This tiny bit of difference can cause HUGE problems when quilting Sashiko designs.

The Diagonal Cross Hatching Templates come in two sizes, 1-1/2 inch and 2 inch. The distance is measured across the WIDEST part of the "diamond" shape as shown below by the horizontal arrow.

When measured between the stitching lines DIAGONALLY, because of "Math", the distance between the two lines is 1 inch for the 1-1/2 inch Diagonal Cross Hatching Template and 1-1/2 inches for the 2 inch Diagonal Cross Hatching Template.

That is why you use the 1-1/2 inch Diagonal Cross Hatching Template to make 1 inch cross hatching and the 2 inch  Diagonal Cross Hatching Template to make 1-1/2 inch cross hatching.

Yes, I know that this sounds strange, but it is true! Just trust me on this!

To have the cross hatching as accurate as possible, a grid of horizontal and vertical lines must be drawn on the fabric before quilting. To make your quilting life easier, I highly recommend using the Longarm University Stencil Grids.

The Stencil Grids are laser cut and made of translucent plastic, just like hand quilting stencils. For details on the Stencil Grids Click Here
