Pricing for your Quilting Business
Machine Quilting Business Survey Report
WA State Legislature Presentation
Cindy Roth has been a professional longarm quilting for nearly 20 years. In that time she has seen machine quilting in general, and longarm quilting specifically, become a recognized and accepted alternative to hand quilting. Many prestigious quilting awards have been awarded over the past several years to quilts that have been machine quilted.
During this time of unequalled growth and acceptance of longarm quilting, many professional longarm quilters have had to deal with the issues of running a professional quilting business.
From 2006 to 2009, Cindy Roth has been the business columnist for Unlimited Possibilities magazine. Below are two collections of articles she has written for Unlimited Possibilities and other professional quilting magazines.
Many professional quilters struggle with the issue of how to price their quilting services to their customers. As a professional quilter you have a major investment in a machine, quilting tools, templates and supplies for your machine. You have also spent your valuable time to practice, practice, practice and develop your quilting skills and style. Cindy advocates a professional approach to pricing, not "I'll charge what everyone else in the area is charging." The pricing articles in this booklet will help any professional quilter make educated choices in setting their prices, no matter what "everyone else in the area is charging?
Included in this booklet are the following articles:
How Much Are You REALLY Making?

In early Spring 2011, I posted a Machine Quilting Business Survey, consisting of 10 questions, on the Longarm University website and sent it to the names on the Longarm University mailing list. It was also advertised on several Yahoo Groups machine quilting groups and it was also forwarded to other lists, chat groups and quilting organizations. The survey was hosted at Survey Monkey www.surveymonkey.com where the responses were collected, tallied and the percentages calculated. This survey was posted for several weeks. No personal information was collected in this survey and there was no way to determine where respondents were located.
After reading the report I am sure that you will agree that Professional Machine Quilting is an exciting, vibrant and growing industry!

On October 13, 2010, I had the pleasure to give a presentation on Professional Machine Quilting in Washington State to the Lt. Governor’s Legislative Committee on Economic Development and International Relations.
In preparing for this presentation, I looked at several statistical sources about quilting in general, created my own survey of Professional Quilters in Washington State and made many assumptions based on my knowledge of machine quilters and machine quilting.
My main source of information about the quilting industry in general was the Quilting in America 2010 Survey. To view this survey Click Here
I took the information from the Quilting in America 2010 Survey and along with what I know about professional machine quilters, I put together the following presentation.

I also included information from a very un-scientific survey of machine quilters in Washington State. To view the results of this survey in a pdf file Click Here
The final part of my survey was to make comments that would be passed along to state legislators.
